QuestionWe have a 7 foot tall house plant which resembles corn. We would like to prune it. Can you help us identify it and suggest any pruning techniques. It has dark green waxy leaves and needs to be supported since it is so tall.
AnswerHi Maggie,
Your description is a bit vague, but I think you may have a close relative of the corn plant called Dracaena 'Janet Craig.'
If so, you can prune any stem back to any height at all. Keep in mind that new growth will emerge just below the point on the stem where you make the cut and then grow upwards from there.
In general it is best to prune back far enough that there is lots of room for the new growth to come in. But you really can't go wrong with pruning as it will not affect the health of the plant, just its appearance.
The pruned off section can be rooted at the base of the plant, in water or in its own pot.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
