philodendron new leaves yellow, wilt then die

Question
I have a large Philodenron (about 3 1/2'tall) in my office it gets light from an outside window but only direct sun for about an hour a day. (at other times buildings block the direct rays of the sun so it is only getting reflected sun)  Seems like plenty of light.  it gets water once a week which seems to be about right because by that time the soil is fairly dry in the to inch or so.

When the new leaves come up from the bottom they turn yellow and die by the time they get about 6 inches in length.  The whole plant looks less healthy than when i first bought it.

I've had it for about 4 months and have never fertilized it since I suspect it was heavily fertilized in the plant store.

What am I doing wrong?

Answer
Hi Ron,

First I need to know which type of Philodendron you have. I suspect it is a Philodendron selloum or a Monstera deliciosa. Is there a way that you can ID it for me or send a photo to me at [email protected]?

Did you repot it after you acquired it?

New leaves usually emerge from the top of the plant, so I am confused by your comment about their coming up from the bottom.

I look forward to your reply.

Regards,
Will Creed
