QuestionHi Will,
I bought a ficus about six months ago, and have kept it indoors, watered it regularly (but not too much) put some plant food around it (didn't overdo it). It hasn't grown much (not at all as far as I can see, but obviously it must have a little -- it is about a half a foot tall). It is very droopy and all the leaves are falling off. Only two big leaves left! Slight discoloration in some of the fallen leaves.
I have never owned a ficus before. Is there any way I can save it?
Hope you can help,
Mike.
AnswerHi Mike,
I am not sure which Ficus tree you have. Usually, Ficus refers to Ficus benjamina, which has small leaves about two inches long. However, Ficus lyrata has much larger leaves that are larger than your hand.
In either case, having the plant right in front of a sunny window is very important. You didn't mention light, so I have to speculate that is the problem. Growth rate is slow to non-existent in reduced light.
In low light, plants do not use very much water so it is also very easy to overwater a plant in low light.
Repotting a Ficus can also contribute to its decline, particularly if the pot is too large.
I have written an article on Ficus tree care that I will email to you if you send a request to my address below.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
