QuestionMy husband and I just moved into a new condo with an upper level patio/deck (no planting ground) in Southern California. We would like to get some green out there, but we're not very attentive gardeners, and would hate to kill anything we might get. The patio is in direct sun most of the day, and moving into summer the temperature may reach up to 90. Any advice? Thank you!
AnswerJennifer,
If you want plants that can survive neglect you need cacti and plants you see in the desert. Ponytail palms would like it and also be able to stand neglect.
If you can remember to check plants and water them at least once or twice a week or even daily when it is above 90 degrees then blooming hibiscus, an alamanda vine, bromeliads, crotons, wandering jew or moses in the bullrushes vine. Most topiaries and bonsai trees would also be happy there. Wax begonias are also sun lovers as are the newer colorful sweet potato vines. Any of the citrus trees would also do well in large pots.
Most nurseries and garden centers would be able to help you. Lowes or Home Depot would be good starting points. When you buy a plant make sure you get its common and latin names if at all possible. After finding some plants if you have more questions plaese feel free to write again. Good luck.
