QuestionHi, I have two banana plants in my house. They are all dying. They start to grow and add more leaves about 2 weeks after I got them but now they are turning brown and some of the leaves are snapping off. I water once a week and that is it. They are in front of a window so I am thinking they are getting enough light. Do I need to change the soil? Help!
AnswerHi Irene,
In general, banana plants require a lot of direct sunlight indoors. Without this light they are inevitably doomed. They should be close to a south or west facing window that is completely unobstructed throughout the day.
They need a well-drained soil mix and they use a lot of water when they are healthy and in good light. Keep the soil evenly moist in the summer and allow it to dry somewhat more in the winter. Good watering and light will minimize, but not eliminate, leaf browning.
Good light and not overwatering will keep the stems sturdy and strong.
If you repotted, there is a very good chance that the roots are rotting. Changing the soil will not help, but will certainly aggravate the problem.
One other note, make sure temps are always above 60 degrees.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
