QuestionI have a large (too big for the largest post I can put in my house)split-leaf philodendron that is about 20 years old. I would like to divide this plant and am not sure how to go about it. The plant is usually left outside in the summer and inside before frost (we are in northern Virginia) and the pot is now dry-rotted to the point where it is difficult to move at all. I need to divide this plant and put it in smaller pots and hopefully give one or two away! If you need a picture, I can provide one. I am not sure if I can just split the woody trunks (about 6) or what. Thanks for your help!

split the base area up into sections making sure you get some root system & foliage w/each section. usually this is best done w/a sharp knife. plant each division into a new container using a good pre-mixed indoor potting mix.
then water by weight. put a saucer under the pot. water and let the plant sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes. after that time pour off any excess water in the saucer. pick up the pot. it should feel heavy. don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight. outdoors check the plant everyday. indoors check it every 3-10 days. watering frequency depends on many factors(sun exposure, type of plant, wind, day temps, etc.).
indoors you need to add fertilize on a weekly to monthly basis during the growing season.
good luck.
