Indoor Jasmine tree

Question
Dear Ms. Kittle

I recently purchased a jasmine tree for my house in upstate new york. The pot in which I transplanted it to, is about 3 feet high by 1 1/2 feet diameter. I placed rocks in the bottom for drainage. Miracle grow potting soil, one good water after planting, then once a week I  watered and spray the leaves and trunk.... I have the plant not in direct sun but it is sourounded by windows east west and south exposures. It's dying, all the leaves are falling off, there are some small little buds coming off the trunk, but it's not throwing flowers anymore... what did I do wrong?
thank you for your help.

Answer
Shawn,

What size pot was this plant in originally? This plant loves the sun, it needs moved to a sunny location.

If the pot has no drainage hole in the bottom you have probably overwatered it. The soil toward the bottom is probably really soggy and the roots are rotting.  No plant should be transplanted into a pot more than 2 inches larger than the original pot.  Most tropical plants like to be rootbound. Put it back in the pot it was in when you bought it, give it lots of sun and be very careful not to overwater it. They hate sitting in soggy soil. The soil must get dry between waterings. If you do that it may come back. Good luck.
