QuestionWe have a Scheffelera plant in our conference room at work.
It is about 7' tall and it has new branches close to the pot it is in.It is a very full plant. The lower branches are growing out and are sagging somewhat. I would like to know if we should "prune" it- I don't want to kill it - we've had it for 6-7 years, and I would like to re-pot what ever would be cut off (I couldn't bear to throw it out).We will be moving soon to a new location. Right now the plant gets alot of indirect sunlight and it's new location will be a more filtered type of sunlight-windows are much smaller and have blinds on them. I would really
appreciate any advice you could give me. Thank you-Bonnie
AnswerHi Bonnie,
Scheffleras certainly can be pruned without damaging the plant, but I am not clear if you are looking to prune the lower branches or the top section. New growth cuttings can be rooted in damp potting mix.
If you send me a photo to my address below, I may be able to provide more specific pruning advice.
In its new location with reduced light, you may see a gradual reduction in the total number of leaves. Some of the lower leaves may gradually drop off as it cannot support as many leaves in lower light.
Try to maximize the light as much as possible after the move by keeping the blinds open as much as possible. In lower light, you will find that the plant uses less water so be sure to make that gradual adjustment.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
