QuestionHello,
I have a fiscus tree and would like to know if i can put it on my balcony during the summer. My balcony is a real suntrap especially at the hottest part of the day. I do know that the tree will probably loose some leaves but what are the chances of permanent damage ?
many thanks
Kate
AnswerHi Kate,
Ficus leaves are very sensitive to even minor changes in light. Moving yours to direct sun outside is a MAJOR change in light. Many if not most of the leaves will burn or drop off and will be replaced by new leaves that are adapted to the intense outdoor light. By the end of summer you will have a very lush tree. However, after you move it back inside in the fall, lots of those new leaves will drop and be replaced by leaves better suited to the reduced indoor light. It will look like Fall in your home!
The tree will survive these changes as long as you adjust your watering accordingly - more frequent watering in hot outdoor sun. However, you should expect lots of leaf drop both now and again in the fall.
I know lots of people do this, but my preference is to find a location in front of a bright window indoors and leave it there year round. That way it will not have to go through the seasonal changes and major leaf drop.
I have written an article on Ficus tree care that I will email to you or anyone who sends a request to me at my address below.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
