QuestionI just bought a Kentia Palm and upon delivery I noticed that some of the leaf tops where covered in brown spots, some of the leaf bottoms where covered in a brownish dust like matter (almost looks like an ant but is not an insect) and there are some shafts which look to be broken ie no leaves. I was wonderring if you could give me some advice as to the health of the palm. Are these simply characteristics of the kentia?
Thanks
Nic
AnswerHi Nic,
If the brown leaf spots are in the leaf and do not scrape off with your fingernail, then they are probably the result of a leaf fungus common in greenhouses where overwatering is used. The spots cannot be removed, but the fungus will not be a problem as long as the leaves are kept dry.
If the spots are slightly raised and scrape off easily, then they are scale insects. If so, let me know and I will tell you how to treat them.
The brownish dust is probably just part of the leaves as they form. Nothing to be concerned about.
Newly emerging fronds are shaft-like and do not open up until they are fully extended. They have blunt ends until they open. This is a slow process. If that is what you are referring to, then just be patient. If the stems are indeed broken, then that would be from mishandling and it means that frond is unlikely to ever open.
If I have misunderstood your description, please email me some photos to my address below.
