spider mites?

Question
I think my dwarf schefflera may have spider mites. small brown spots on leaves and trunks some leaves look as if they are slowly being eatin away others just simply fall off. It recieves good morning sun and all day it is very bright in my livingroom. If this is spider mites please how can I get rid of them fast. Are they harmful to humans or pets my cats sleep under it!

Answer
Hi Stuey,

Spider mites are not generally described as small brown spots nor do they create small brown spots or leave leaves looking eaten.

If you suspect spider mites, look on the undersides of the leafs for tiny dust-like particles smaller than the head of a pin. Also look for a mottled appearance to the leaves. If that is what you find, let me know and I will tell you how to treat spider mites.

Spider mites are not at all harmful to (or interested in) people or pets.

If the spots are part of the leaf itself, then it is probably not an insect problem. A photo of the entire plant and a closeup of the spots would be very helpful. Please email the photos to my address below.
