Beaucarnea (red pony tail)

Question
I have had a red pony tail for 2 years in its original ceramic pot (approx 2" deep and 6" wide.) Pony tail is approximately 6 " tall.
I originally kept the plant as a centre piece on dining table, but due to us renovating, I moved it to the front of the house where there is a double glass window, but I kept it on the floor about 4 or 5ft away from window . Apart from the tips of the foliage going brown it did look O.K, but I have to admit I haven't paid much attention to it for about a month or so, and I have only just noticed that around the base of the pony tail it looks as though it is rather dark in colour, in comparison to the upper part of the trunk which is lighter and also the fork prongs look as though they have shrivelled up. About a year ago I did get some advice from another web site, but have since been unable to make contact with them. I was told to take the plant outside once a month and let it have a little morning sun, and give it a good watering and some osmocote fertiliser which I was doing and whilst it never really had a prolific amount of foliage on the top, it looked alright, but I am afraid that my neglect has spelt the end of my "Pony Tail) I wondered whether you are able to advise whether the plant is salvagable or not.

Answer
Carmela,

In the last month how often havw you watered the plant? Has the base of the plant shriveled or is it still firm? These plants like lots of sun, mine goes outside for the summer and in the winter it sits next to a large south facing window. I water mine every 2 weeks during the winter, in the summer weekly. If the bulb is still firm move it to a sunny location and start watering it every 10 days.

If the base is shriveled it is not salvagable. Good luck.
