QuestionHey Will,
I recently rescued a peace lily from the curbside, and the previous owners had placed a box on top of the plant, resulting in all of the stems being smashed or snapped near the base. I wasn't sure what to do so I snipped each stem to a height of about 3 inches above the soil, basically gave it sort of a buzzcut. Was this a big mistake? Should I expect it to "come back to life", and if so what can I do to help it along? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

AnswerHi Becky,
If the leaf stems were creased quite close to the soil, then it is only a matter of time before they wither and die. So you did the right thing.
As long as the roots have not been abused, then you should get some new growth emerging from the soil. The new growth will produce smaller leaves initially, but in time new leaves should get larger.
Provide lots of bright indirect light, such as on a north windowsill. Keep it very tightly potted (A large pot will not make it grow larger or faster.). Water it thoroughly with non-hard water when the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch. Do not fertilize it until it has lots of healthy new leaves.
Send me a photo when it has recovered!
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
