QuestionI have had my Clivia plant for about a year. When I purchased it - it had beautiful yellow flowers - I think it is the Nakamura Yellow variety. My plant has not flowered this year - nor does it appear to be growing a flower stock. What can I do to make it flower? I have a water meter and was wondering what it should read to be the best for the plant. My plant has some leaves that have brown tips. I keep it by the light but it's not in sunlight. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it!
AnswerDebbie,
You may have kept it too moist for the winter. The following info came from this website: http://www.shieldsgardens.com/info/CliviaFlowering.html
To induce a mature clivia plant to flower, the growth cycle must be interrupted. It is usually advisable to stop watering the plant at this time. The plant must be exposed to cool temperatures for the equivalent of about 25 to 30 days and nights. The temperatures should be kept between 55癋 (13癈) and 34癋 (1癈) during this period. Do not expose the plant to freezing temperatures (32癋 or 0癈) at any time. If warmer temperatures are unavoidable occasionally during this critical cooling period, the overall cooling time may have to be extended. Without adequate cooling, the latent flower structure will not be activated, and the plant will not bloom, no matter how mature and otherwise healthy it is.
It may not be too late. Stop watering it immediately and give it that 30 day dry cool period and you may have blooms in a couple of months. Your lighting sounds fine. Good luck.
