QuestionDear Will,
I lieve in San Jose, CA. Te wheather is mild in winter (typical 50 degrees) and rarely get to 100 degrees in summer. Can we put down majectic palms in outsie environment? I love to have palm trees around my house. But I only know a few palm trees such as Mexican fan, queen, king, Phoenix and majectics. I do not like Mexican fan due to it shape. On the other hand, Phoenix looks very nice, but I heard that its roots can damage your pipes and foundation.
Thank you for your advice.
AnswerHi Douglas,
Your question is not really within my area of expertise, which is limited to growing plants indoors.
However, I do know that the Majesty Palm (Ravena rivulara) is hardy only in Zones 10 and 11 where temps never fall below freezing. I do not believe it would survive in your area.
If you are trying to identify plants that will survive in your area, not only temperature, but rainfall and soil quality are important factors. Only someone familiar with your local area can help you select an appropriate plant. Try a local garden center, arboretum or landscaping company.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
