QuestionI have two peace lillies I got from my mothers funeral 11 days ago and I am good at killing anything green! I have one that sits at my front door that some of the leaves are turning yellow at the tips and the other one is in the middle of my living room where it does not receive any sun, so far so good and i have what I think is a China Doll(?) It has small leaves oval shapped with a point at the end and very dark green. I am not sure how to take care of any of these so I won't kill them, please help!
AnswerTanya,
Your peace lillies should be in a location that is bright enough during the day that if you sat there you could read a paperback novel without turning on additional lights. But it also needs no sun shining on it. Yellow leaf tips indicate that you are overwatering it. It needs to be in a pot with a drain hole in the bottom and a drainage tray underneath it. When you water you need to give it enough water so that all the soil in the pot is moist and a little goes into the drain tray. Then you should not water it again until the soil feels very dry and the plant feels light weight. During the winter mine only need water every 2 weeks. In the summer once a week is enough. If they get too much water they roots start to rot and the first sign is yellow leaf tips. Fertilize it once a month with a water soluable fertilizer such as Miracle Grow or Peters.
China Doll is the common name for Radermachera Sinica. it needs bright lighting and to be kept moist all the time but do not leave it sitting with water in its drain tray.
These plants are pretty and delicate looking, they have a compact shape to begin with but with time they stretch out and become leggy.
Watering must be very consistent. Water the plant and an hour later pour any excess water out of the drain tray. Check it daily for dry soil and weight. If it feels heavy it doesn't need water. If it is light it does. Yellow brittle leaves indicate under watering, blackish tips on green leaves indicate over watering. If the environment of this plant remains constant, water regularly every week, or every other week, depending on how the topsoil feels.
If a bushy appearance is desired keep new growth pinched out.
If you have more questions feel free to write again.
Good luck.
