QuestionHello Mr. Hern,
I'm in Minnesota and my poor philadendron is yellowing. It's quite embarassing to have beautiful azaleas but yellow philadendron vines! :) I've had it for 1.5 years and it was doing really well. I even took some cuttings from it and started a new plant that was also doing quite well. They sit on my windowsill (west side of the apt) and get as much light as possible in MN winters. I water them every few days, and recently repotted the large plant because last time I hadn't potted it deep enough and the roots were showing. Since the repotting it has gotten even more yellow, though. I don't feed it with anything special. I thought it might be too cold next to the window, or that it wasn't getting enough light. My mom said I was watering it too much.
What do you think? I'd like any advice you can give.
Thanks!

i'm in southern NJ. mom is probaby right. most plant problems are caused by improper watering. water by weight. put a saucer under the pot. water and let the plant sit in the excess water for 5-10 minutes. after that time pour off any excess water in the saucer. pick up the pot. it should feel heavy. don't water again until it feels considerably lighter in weight. outdoors during warmer weather check the plant everyday. indoors check it every 5-10 days. watering frequency depends on many factors(sun exposure, wind, day temps, etc.).
east exposure is better than west. the sun is not as strong on the morning side. just give it filtered(not direct) lite on the west side. philodendrons don't need direct sunlight. direct lite can burn the leaves if exposed too long to it.
good luck.
