QuestionHi there,
We have a cast iron plant in our office, medium pot, 8 ft high, gets medium light. It's newly purchased from a few months ago. The medium bottom section has a lot of its leaves yellow in the middle and brown on their edges. It has been watered with a .5L bottle of water every day, its soil is always moist. From what I see online, I am thinking of watering it only 2 times a week. Maybe it is experiencing root rot? I can't check the bottom of its pot (too heavy) otherwise I would remove any excess water. There is also thin plastic lining the inside of the pot, which I can't seem to remove, could this be the problem?
Thanks,
Maria
AnswerHi Maria,
Your plant is definitely getting too much water and is at risk for root rot. The soil definitely needs to dry out some in between wwaterings. In addition, water has to be able to drain out through bottom drainage holes, so any lining that prevents that should be removed. Finally, the plant should never be allowed to sit in excess water.
I can provide some more specific information after I have some additional information from you.
If your plant is a a cast iron plant (Aspidistra), then it cannot be 8 feet tall, as they grow to no more than 3 feet. Perhaps you have a corn plant. Or perhaps it is 8 inches tall. In any case, we need to clear up its identity.
I also need to know the diameter of the pot and whether or not you repotted it.
If you can email a photo of the plant and pot to my address below, that would help a lot.
