QuestionI have a great looking african violet plant. The only thing missing is the flowers. I think I've had it fo r 4 years and it had flowers on it when I got it, but not since.
AnswerAnnette,
For your violet to flower it needs three things: LIGHT, WATER, HUMIDITY. They need a lot of light; sunlight if possible, but not direct sunlight. If they can get 4-5 hours of sunlight a day (from behind a sheer curtain) that would be perfect. They need enought water. Usually, I water mine twice a week. They do not want to be soggy, but they do need to be kept MOIST. If you add fertilizer to the water, reduce it to HALF of what the label recommends. NOTE: African violets may be fertilized all year long, whereas most houseplants go "dormant" in winter months. I fertilize mine by adding it to the water, so they get "fed" every time I water them. Also, they need humidity. This is difficult to provide in the average home, but if you can keep violets out of cold drafts that will help. Also, try to mist your violets 2, 3, 4 or more times a day; as often as you can! The main thing however, is the WATER and the LIGHT. If these two things are in perfect balance everything else should fall into place, including blooms. Good luck.
