Hi Expert,

Originally I bought a majesty palm for my home. After going on-line I read that these palms are horrible house plants and were destinted to die. After attempting to grow 3 of these plants that all ended up dying, I sought out another type of palm that might be a little better for a beginning gardener. When I spoke to someone in the garden department, it was recommended that I go for a cat palm.

I am sending this to find out ANYTHING I can that would help with growing this plant. Mind you, my only other experience I have with growing plants is with the Majesty palms. The new Cat palm is next to my tv and is approximately 4 feet away from the window, receiving indirect light. Right now it is winter so my gas furnace is blasting constantly. I have it in the pot that it came in and was considering replanting it. I plan on watering it once a week or so.

Help me pleeze!

Your new palm likes to be moist and not dry out totally. It can even stand to sit with a little water in the drain tray but not for long periods of time.  It can be attacked by insects so you need to watch closely for any signs of insects such as spider mites or mealy bugs.  It needs enough light that you could easily read a book sitting where it sits. It just doesn't like sun actually shining on it. In nature it grows under trees in shady but bright light.

You chose difficult plants to start with. Do not repot until April when days are longer. I even have difficulty with palms. If this doean't work out I suggest that you try a large schefflera or ficus tree next, they are great plants and have a lot less problems. Good luck.
