QuestionI have a yucca tree with 4 trunks ranging in height from 2-5 feet
tall. it is in a 5 gallon plastic pot. It began struggling after a
couple of months and i discovered it was sitting in water. i
removed the basin and allowed the soil to dry halfway down. at
the same time i discoved white flies on the leaves and eliminated
them with insecticidal soap. the heads are continuing to wilt.
today i carefully removed the plant from the pot to look for root
rot. i did not see any signs and no odor but am not sure what to
look for. the plant sits next to a window but im afraid its not
getting enough light (chicago winter). any options for artificial
light source? or do you suspect other problems.
thank you.
AnswerHi Ashley,
I am quite sure the continued wilting is a result of your Yucca's having been left sitting in water. You didn't indicate how long that might have been, but I suspect that is the problem.
Root rot does not always have a distinct odor and unless you have considerable experience, you might not be able to identify early stage of root rot. In addition, it takes a month or more before a plant reacts to an adverse condition and also a month or more before it responds to the remedy.
Let's hope that the damage to the roots was not too severe and that your Yucca will gradually recover. Look for healthy new growth as a sign of recovery.
In the interim, all you can do is to be sure it is directly in front of an unobstructed window and that you allow the top half of the soil to dry out in between waterings.
Fluorescent light is the best option for plant growth. However, an incandescent grow light or a 150 watt flood light will also supplement the light, but I am not convinced that is the remedy for the symptoms you described.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
