indoor water garden plants under lights

Question
Hi Will,

Sorry, I should have thought of this.  I want something with leaves and stems above water, with roots in the water.

Thanks and best wishes,
Chris Vogel

Can you recommend a houseplant that will grow in water under flourescent lights?

Thanks!
Answer -
Hi Chris,

Are you seeking plants with roots that are growing in water with the leaves and stems above the water or are you seeking aquarium plants that grow completely under water?

Answer
Hi Chris,

There are many possibilities. In general, most indoor plants that have soft, fleshy stems will root readily in water and continue to grow that way for several years. The water should be changed at least monthly and a tiny amount of complete fertilizer (one that includes micro or trace elements listed on the label) should be added. It is also important that you not use hard water.

Most plants that are listed as being low to moderate light plants will do fine under fluorescent light alone. High light plants would need at least some natural sunlight.

Pothos, Chinese evergreen, wandering Jew, Swedish ivy, Cyperus alternifolius, and Dieffenbachia are among the many plants that are both soft-stemmed and will grow well under fluorescent light.

If there are some specific plan species that you would like to use, let me know and I will advise you as to their ability to work in that environment.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
