Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

Question
Dear Will,

Wanting a good low-light plant, I acquired my first Aglaonema a few months ago, a small 4" plant that sits in a west-facing windowsill here in the Pacific Northwest where we receive little winter sunshine.  With lots of new growth, the plant is doing reasonably well, but the older bottom leaves are slowly turning limp and yellow before dying - so far it's lost 4 leaves in as many months.  Lacking previous experience with Chinese Evergreens I don't know if this is to be expected.   I let the top 1/4 soil dry between thorough waterings and the plant is in its original grow pot.  Any insights and advice you can offer at your convenience are greatly appreciated.  Photos are available if helpful.

BTW, I read in your response to another question that you are currently authoring a book.  That's terrific news, Will!  Your invaluable plant advice is helping turn my home into a lush indoor paradise and I eagerly await publication of your book.  No pressure, LOL!

Thanks for your help once again!

Regards,
Cricket

Answer
Hi Cricket,

Is that your real name?

It is quite common for Aglaonemeas and other plants to adjust to a new environment by dropping some older leaves. One per month is not a cause for concern as long as healthy new growth is coming in to replace the older leaves.

I am impressed that you have resisted the urger to repot and that you are watering it properly. Keep up the good work and I know you will be rewarded in Plant Heaven!

I am always happy to view photos as they often reveal something that does not come through in text descriptions.

Thanks for your interest in my book. I am an expert in indoor plant care, but a novice when it comes to book publishing. If you have any insights or connections to the publishing world, please let me know!

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
