Help an ailing plant

Question
We have a plant here in our office that has been passed from office to office trying to revive this poor thing.  My boss has asked me to go out and purchase new soil and a bigger pot and I noticed on your website that that is the most common reaction, but not the right one.  I am not at all familier with indoor plants so I don't know the name of it but hate to see it in such misery!  It stands about three feet tall, in a 3-4 gallon pot.  It has large dark green leaves that are wilting, browning on the edge and it is tipping over in it's pot, exposing some of the root.  It is in a room with no windows, only florescent lighting.  I'm not sure if it has ever been replanted.  I think it has been over watered in effort to save it.  If needed I can send a photo.  I would really like to save this poor thing!

Thank you so much,

Becky Glenn

Answer
Hi Becky,

Thank you for reading my website. Yes, repotting is the common reaction and the incorrect one. I cannot ID your plant until I see a photo, but I am sure that the 3-4 gallon pot is plenty larger enough. Replacing soil is also not a good idea.

Please email a photo to me at [email protected] so i can ID the plant and also make some care recommendations. Make sure the photo shows the entire plant, including the pot. A closeup of the exposed roots or any other symptoms that trouble you might also help.

If you are in NYC, I make office calls.
