cutting back a very happy corn plant

Question
I have a 3 stalk corn plant. it is very happy and healthy...unfortunatly it is hitting the ceiling and can't go another inch.
I need to know how to cut it back without causing it too much stress.
We will be moving in the next 5-6 months and a shorter plant will be sooooo much easier to handle.Right now my plant is living with eastern exposure and is amazing!
Do I need to put something on the ends of the cuts?
Where do I cut it?
I hope you can help me....I need to do it soon.

Answer
Dina,

You can cut it wherever you would like just above a leaf joint. I would reccomend cutting at least half off. You can use the part that you are cutting off as a cutting and dust the cut edge with rooting hormone and insert it in a pot of fresh soil. Then water it and treat it just as you do the parent. It will root in about a month and you will have a beautiful plant for another room or to give a friend. You might consider it to be a house warming gift to yourself!

You can get rooting hormone at any garden center like Lowes. The plant you have left will grow a new top and possibly more side shoots. No, you do not need to put anything on the cut end of the lower portion, just leave it open to the air and it will heal. On the top section just use the rooting hormone.

You can if you want the lower portion shorter than half cut it off as short as you would like. Then I would reccommend
cutting a center section off and just pitching it and not try to root more than the top 24 inches.

Good luck! If you have any more questions write again.
