QuestionI have a norfolk island pine and it keeps turning brittle. I keep watering it and I leave it in the sun but nothing seems to help. What can i do?
AnswerHi Angel,
You haven't provide much specific information (plant size, pot size, source of light, watering frequency, etc., so I cannot offer you specific advice for your Norfolk Pine. However, i can tell you what conditions it prefers so you can determine where you may have gone wrong.
NIP's do best when kept quite potbound. Repotting is rarely necessary and if done unnecessarily it often leads to root rot.
It should be located close to an unobstructed window, although it does need some protection from direct sun in the midday hours.
The top quarter of the soil should be allowed to dry out in between thorough waterings.
It prefers cool temps in the 50-60 degree range in winter, although this is not essential.
Misting and fertilizing are not necessary.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
