house plant smell

Question
Hi Will,
I have a general question about house plants. We have several varieties of house plants in our home. When I water them, my wife complains of a smell that I think is just the smell of wet soil, but nonetheless, can be strong for a day or so in certain areas of the house. The plants are all generally healthy otherwise.
Is there anything that I can do minimize this odor...something I can put in or on the soil?

Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,

The addition of horticultural lime often helps mask odors. However, a strong odor may be an indication of a problem that needs more than masking.

If your plants are potted in soil that includes compost, that may be a source of odor. It is best to use soilless, peat-based potting mixes for indoor plants - no odor, pests, or diseases. Compost should be limited to outdoor use.

If your plants are in soil that is kept too moist, then it is possible that the roots are rotting and causing an odor.

Finally, if anything other than plain water is being added to the soil, that could be a source of odor.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
