MAINTAINING SPIDER PLANTS


Question
I JUST REPOTTED A CHLOROPHYTUM COMOSUM--SPIDER PLANT INTO A BIGGER POT AND IT IS ABOUT 6 MONTHS OLD TO A YEAR I DUNNO IT WAS A FULL PLANT WITH BLOOMS AND ALL I WATER IT 2-3 TIMES A WEEK AND ITS INDOORS NOW SINCE ITS COLD IN MY AREA AND I USE CITY WATER AND ITS UNDER A GROW LIGHT BUT THE LEAVES ARE TURNING YELLO AT THE TIPS TO THE STEMS OF THE PLANT AND I AM HAVING TROUBLE STARTING THE LITTLE BABY SHOOTS ALSO  THERE WAS ALOT OF EXCESS WATER IN THE RUNOFF LIKE IT WAS STAGNATE AND STINKY SO I DUMPED IT OUT I NEED HELP--

Spider plants do not like to be repotted. They prefer to be rootbound. When you start babies it should be in the pot you want them in forever. If it is a large pot just start more babies in it. The faster they get rootbound the better.

Do not water it again until it is very very dry. The roots need a breathing period between waterings. Never leave them sit in a tray of water. Water them and an hour later pour off any excess water.

I also suspect that it may not be getting enough light. Your grow light should be no more than 12 inches from the top of the plant. Sitting in a south facing window with nothing between it and the glass would be even better.

Be very careful about the watering from now on. Do not water until it has been dry on top for several days. Even to the point of drooping because it will perk right up as soon as you water. If you overwater it the roots rot and the plant is very slow to recuperate from that.
