QuestionHave you ever heard of a plant called a "step mother's tongue?" My boyfriend wants one for Christmas, and I cannot find it anywhere.
Thanks for your help.
AnswerHeather, Sorry it took me so long. I was looking in my books to get an answer for your question.
I am not aware of a plant called "Step mother's tongue", however, there is a plant with a nickname of "Mother-in-Law's Tongue". It is commonly known as the "snake plant" because it has long, (VERY long) stiff green leaves. Some varieties are solid, while others have yellow, black, and white striped leaves that are pointed on the end. The leaves are thick and leathery. This plant is very tough, and has often been called the plant that can't be killed. You can kill it with over-watering, though. It needs to be watered only occasionally; I water mine only about once a month! It does well in corners or in low light situations, but should be put outdoors to enjoy the sun during late spring and summer. You can then water it about every two weeks. The thing with this plant is DO NOT OVER WATER.
As I said, it has the nicknames of "mother-in-law's tongue" and snake plant. The scientific name is 'Sansevieria'. You can find this plant at any nursery or garden center. They are everywhere. I have even seen them in supermarkets, and they are not very expensive. They grow slowly, but they can grow to be 5-6 feet tall or taller. Good luck.
