sick plants

Question
I have a spathiphyllum that I have had since May. It was thriving nicely. I recently repotted him about a month ago, I see new growth but he seems to be wilty and his leaves are browning. The tips are brown but also the middle of some of the leaves are very brown. I also purchased a Golden Pothos about 2 months ago. He is good size and was doing well when I got him but now his leaves are starting to yellow and dye. I think they might have a bug or a disease but I'm not sure. What should I do to keep my plants from dying?

Answer
Hi Jamie,

The single most common cause of plant failure is unnecessary repotting. Most folks mistakenly believe that a larger pot with lots of room for the roots is a good thing. Unfortunately, that common sense notion is false. A larger pot keeps the roots moist for too long and causes them to rot. That is what is happening with your Spathiphyllum. I hope it is not too late, but get it back into its original pot (or one of similar size) and let the soil dry out almost to the wilt point before adding water.

I need more information about your Pothos. Did you also repot it? What diameter is the pot? What kind of light does it get? Please describe your watering routine.

I look forward to hearing back from you.
