Hairy begonia

Question
Hi, I purchased two different begonia's from a nursery. Both are hairy but the leaves are not the same color. I notice when I come to work eack week the leaves are droopy and burnt around the edges, as if you can crumble them. Can you tell me why they are doing this. I water the plant when I notice the soil is dry upon top like the lady told me. When I first purchased it, it was full of leaves. Now I notice myslef cutting more back every week. Please help me.

Answer
Hi Lynette,

Burnt edges on a Begonia can be caused by several different things, including soil that gets too dry, hard water, too much fertilizer and improper watering.

You mentioned that the leaves are droopy, so that suggests that the soil is getting too dry.

If your local tap water is on the hard side, then switch to filtered, distilled or rainwater.

Begonias need lots of very bright light, but also need protection from the sun's direct rays during the middle of the day.

If you have been fertilizing, then stop.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
