QuestionI live in Omaha, NE. This past spring, I planted several Strobilanthes (Persian Shields) in my backyard. They are in a fairly sheltered area that gets quite good sun during the winter, and when snow falls, it usually drifts deep there (possible insulation from extreme cold air?) I am wondering if these plants might survive a Zone 5 winter, or should I propogate them? If I should propogate, should I place them in water, or use the root hormone/vermiculite method? I truly appreciate any advice you may share - thanks in advance!
AnswerSean,
Strobilanthes needs to be in zone 8 or 9 to survive the winter outdoors. I too am in zone 5 and I would be thrilled if they could survive. I would propagate them using rooting hormone with moist sand. I would take several cuttings because this is not the best time of year to be taking cuttings. Several will insure that at least a few will take. Keep them in the sunniest window possible for the winter and keep it on the dry side, water sparingly. Good luck.
