Will CreedIt is a Prayer...

Question
Will Creed

It is a Prayer plant. It get's filtered sun light most of the day.  Some of the laeves are turning yellow.  The plant was a gift about five weeks ago, so it has not been replanted.  It is in a 8" d. pot with room to grow.  I have only watered it every other week, about two cups tap water each time.  My tap water is on the hard side.

Thank's Bob

The leaves on my Prayer Lily are turning brown.
What am I doing wrong ?
Answer -
Hi Bob,

Is it a Peace lily or a prayer plant? We have to get the identity right first.

Brown leaves have many possible causes, so I need a lot more specific information about your plant.

Which leaves (upper or lower) and what part of the leaves are turning brown?

How much light does it get?

How long have you had it?

How large is the pot?

Have you ever repotted it? If so, when?

How much and how often do you water it?

Is your local tap water on the hard side?

Will Creed

Answer
Hi Bob,

I don't which leaves (older? newer?) are affected nor do I know how extensively, so I can only make some general observations.

First, use distilled, filtered or rainwater instead of tap water. That alone may solve the problem going forward, but it will not correct previously damaged leaves. (Actually nothing will, so remove the discolored leaves.)

When watering wait until the top inch of soil feels dry, then add enough water so that the entire rootball is saturated and a little water trickles through the drainage holes. Do not water again until the top inch of soil is dry.

I don't know what you mean by filtered light. That is one of those loose terms found in books that has different meanings for different people. Your prayer plant should be on a north or east facing windowsill with the window uncovered throughout the day.

No need to fertilize, if you have been.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
