Questionhow do i grow good maiden hair fern indoors? robynne
AnswerHi Robynne,
Maidenhair ferns are not easy indoor plants because they are fragile and unforgiving of lapses in care.
First, do NOT repot your fern. Its roots do not like to be disturbed.
Provide lots of bright light, but protect it from direct sun rays. Right in front of a north window is the best light location.
Water as soon as the surface of the soil is nearly dry or just barely moist. Allowing the soil to get a bit too dry or keeping it constantly wet will cause loss of fronds. Monitor the soil moisture regularly to avoid this.
If your local tap water is on the hard side, then use filtered, distilled, or rainwater instead.
In the winter months when the heat is on, you must increase the humidity by using a humidifier or pebble trays.
Finally, avoid handling the fronds as much as possible as they bruise easily.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
