heat loving plants

Question
I have a sunporch, and get sun all day,but mostly in the morning, and it gets very warm if not hot. I have put plants out there and of course they die. My question is- what plants will survive in that kind of enviroment----cactus?     Thank you,Martha ladd

Answer
Martha,

It is not the heat that causes the plants to die. Most house plants are tropical and can take heat up to 100+ regularly. The problem is the lack of water. When it is warm and sunny all day the plants dry out rapidly and need watering every every every day. If you cannot keep up with watering every day then, yes, cacti are the answer.  Thy will still need to be watered once or twice a week.

If you want beautiful flowers try putting a tropical hibiscus in and water it every night before you go to bed. Water it enough water goes in the drain tray under the plant and half fills it. The plant will suck it up overnight and give it the reserves it needs to get through the next day.

In winter you cut back because the sun is not as high in the sky, the sunporch won't be as hot, and the plants will go semi dormant?  If you have more questions about specific plants to put out there write again and let me know what stae or town you live in. A sun porch like you have is a wonderful place for all kinds of plants. Good luck.
