Question I HAVE AN UMBRELLA PLANT,THAT I HAVE HAD FOR A LONG TIME.IT NOW LOOKS PRETTY BAD.ALL THE LEAVES ARE FALLING OFF.ALL THE LEAVES THAT HAVE STAYED ARE AT THE TOP.IT USED TO FULL MOST OF THE WAY DOWN THE TRUNK.I WAS THINKING OF CUTTING IT DOWN AND MAYBE IT WILL FILL IN AGAIN?BUT I DONT KNOW HOW FAR DOWN I CAN CUT WITH OUT KILLING IT.AND IS THIS THE RIGHT TIME OF THE SEASON TO DO SO?THANK YOU.ROBERT
AnswerHi Robert,
If the older (lower) leaves have fallen off gradually over the years, then pruning is all you need to do. If, however, there has been a recent sudden loss of many leaves, then that means there is some other problem that must be addressed. For instance, a root problem or a change in light or a pest problem.
If the plant is healthy, you can pretty much cut the stems at any point. The new growth will emerge just below the point in each stem where you make the cut. Keep that in mind when deciding where to cut.
The season or time of year makes no difference.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
