Droopy Jade

Question
I have 4 jade plants (individual stalks) in a pot with a 6" diameter  and that is about 5" deep. I bought it this way but the plant has doubled its height in the 2 years that I have had it. It has been located in east light for about 9 months now and it hasn't been moved in that time. This past week the undersides of the leaves began to turn red (which I think is normal) but the tallest of the stalks (about 10" high) suddenly drooped over. It doesn't appear to be top-heavy as all the stalks grow vertically with only a little branching beginning at the tops of the stalks now.
I've read that jade plants don't adapt well to being transplanted.  Is there anything I can do about the droopiness???  For now I have it staked but I'm worried about damaging the root system.

Answer
Hi Jenn,

Thanks for the good information.

There are two possible causes of the drooping. As Jades grow in moderate light, they eventually reach a point where they do become top heavy and the slender stems cannot support the weight of the thick leaves. This is less likely to occur in a south-facing window where the direct sun will produce thicker, stronger stems. The solution to this drooping is regular pruning. Pruning does not harm the plant. In fact it helps promote fuller more compact growth. I recommend pruning back by about one-third.

The other possibility is that either under or over watering will cause the stems to weaken. If watering thoroughly does not improve the conddition, then root rot caused by overwatering should be considered. In general, the top third to half of the soil should dry out in between thorough waterings.
