Question -
We have a large (7') palm tree type plant in our office whose outer branches are turning yellow.  It is in a 16" pot.  We water it once a week and include 10-15-10 plant food in the watering.  Could we be over-watering it?  The plant is in front of the window facing East. This plant replaces the original one that didn't make it after about 6 months.  We hope not to lose another one!  Please help!

Linda,

Yes, you are overwatering and probably overfertilizing too. Do not water until the top couple of inches of soil feels dry. There is still moisture lower in then pot. Palms like sandy soil, not the peat based soils they usually come potted in. You have to be very careful not to overwater and never leave it sit with water in its drain tray. That is like sitting in a swamp and they hate that. The lighting is fine but cut back on the water. Good luck.

Darlene,
I have another question about this plant.  Should the yellowed leaves be removed or can they become healthy again?
Thanks, Linda

Answer
Linda,

No, the yellowed leaves will not turn green again. Trimming them off will encourage the plant to send out new growth. If this plant does not survive I would encourage you to look for a large bamboo palm. They are much easier to keep healthy. Here are 2 info sheets on them:

Goodluck with the palm you have. Just be careful about watering.

Darlene
