Poison Plant for Turtles

Question
We have two plants we have always called "Rubber Trees". Large oval green leaves, woodsy stems.  They are 28 years old, winters in the house summers outside, and have grown too big for our home even though I have repeatdly trimmed them back.  We want to bring them to my wife's school so they will stay alive in the science classroom.  The science teacher has 4 turtles that roam the room all the time.  Her question to us is if the plant drops any leaves to the floor the turtles will eat the leaves and if the plant is poisonius it will kill the turtles and probably be hard on the students. Can you help with our situation?  We only have a few days since the frost is moving closer to our area the plants won't last through the night.

Answer
Hi Joe,

Rubber trees (Ficus elastica) are not listed as being toxic to people or pets. Although, pets usually refers to cats and dogs, I think it is unlikley that turtles would be hurt by Rubber Trees. However, only a vet could say for sure.

Your rubber trees can always be cut back even more and maintained at the size that you want them. When it comes to pruning, no need to be timid.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
