QuestionI bought a beautiful philodendron a while back that had some really huge leaves. However, many of these leaves have died off. How do I get the leaves to get as big as the ones that were on there before, I really thought they were beautiful. I really appreciate your help.
AnswerHi Jackie,
Those very large leaves are grown under ideal greenhouse conditions where the optimal light, temperatures, and humidity are carefully regulated. It is nearly impossible to duplicate those conditions in the home.
Light is the most important consideration. These Philodendrons need the brightest possible indirect light to grow large leaves. The best home location would be right in a north-facing window and under a skylight, both of which are unobstructed by trees or buildings. In addition, the plants should be supplemented with fluorescent lights placed within 12 inches of the leaves so as to extend the length of the day to 18 hours per day.
Ideally, temps would be about 80 degrees and humidity would be about 90%. Of course, that would not be very comfortable for you. Do what you can to keep the plant as warm and humid as possible.
I realize this is a tall order. Do your best to provide these conditions. Although you may fall short, your Philodendron will certainly still thrive, although its new leaves may not be quite so large.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
