QuestionI recently won an enormous (10" pot) peace plant at work in a raffle. Unfortunately, I have no idea about caring for the plant, and there is no instruction spike in the pot. Can you help?
AnswerHi Brennan
A Peace Lily, aka 'Spathiphyllum', is wonderful houseplant. They are easy to take care of, take low light and produce beautiful white flowers, when grown in the right condition.
Peace Lily's take a med. low to med. high light. The more light they get, the better to produce flowers. They do like water though, but they will tell you when it is time. Do mot allow the soil to get too dry, nor allow it to be 'soggy', that will cause 'root rot'. The plant will look a bit 'wilty' when it needs water. Do not allow it to totally collapse, the more often this happens, the harder it is for it to come back.
Repot in a pot no larger than 12" in a year or so to give it more room to grow and to freshen the soil, which loses nutrients over time. Going over 2" larger will force the plant to concentrate only on growing roots to fill the pot and will take energy away from the foliage.
Good Luck Brennan
