Citrus Mitis & Dropping Fruits

Question
Hi Darlane,
I have got a Citrus Mitis (Calamondin Orange) tree as a gift. This is the first time that I have a plant like this, so I do not know exactly how to take care of this plant.

Can you give me some info about basic needs of this plant (like fertilizing, pollinating, repotting, etc.).

And I would like to know about diseases or pests that may attack the plant. It is almost a week and my plant's tinny fruits started to get yellow and drop down but the big fruits are doing okay. I do not know why it is happining, too. Thanks

Answer
Derya,

Think Florida sunshine! These plants like warm tropical sun all day long.  It is probably dropping fruit because it is not getting enough light. I don't recall where you live but if you can put it outdoors in full sun on warm days and take it indoors when the temperture is dropping below 50 degrees farenheit or 10 degrees centigrade. Indoors put it in the sunniest location possible out of cold drafts.

Fertilize it monthly with an acidic fertilicer. Water it well once a week or so and let it dry between waterings.  Only repot in the spring and use a very sandy soil, like potting soil for cactus or houseplant potting soil and mix sand in with it half and half.

Watch for mealy bugs, aphids, spider mites and scale. You can use a systemic indoor insecticide on this plant, that should be available at any garden center.

Good luck.
