QuestionI was "plant-sitting" some plants for my sister-in-law while she was on vacation and I fell in love with raising them. I would like to purchase some of my own house plants but I have absolutely zero knowledge about what I should look for. I live in a condo that does not have a lot of light so that is something to keep in mind. If you could help me to know either where I should go to look up more information or make some suggestions on house plants that might be appropriate for a first-time "grower", I would appreciate it. Thanks!
AnswerHi Marin
For a low light area, you cannot go wrong with a "Sansevieria", aka Mother In Law plant or Snake Plant. This plant does not have 'green leaves' per se, it is more spikey. I am sure you have seen them in malls, etc. They can be put in a closet and grow! They take very low light and low water. Just put them in the corner and ignore them! The soil likes to be dry to the touch between waterings.
Another good one is a Chinese Evergreen. They will tolerate low light and drought.
A good vine (hanging plant) is of course, the pathos. They are easy and can take a lower light.
A good book to buy to check is 'Houseplants for Dummies'. I have seen it at Costco, amazon.com may have it also.
Good Luck Marin!
