QuestionHi, I'm not so great at keeping house plants alive. A few weeks ago I bought this great tropical plant. I, of course, don't know the name of it and it's not on the pot. But it's a common kind of plant, very jungle=like. I see them around a lot. It's tall, maybe 3 ft, and has lots of long fan-like stalks with long thin leaves on them, very stiff.
The leaves are getting brown on the edges and so I started to water it more. I have been surfing the web trying to find instruction on how to best care for it. I have a tendency to overwater. Any advice?
AnswerHi Kathleen
It really sounds to me as if you have a type of a 'Dracaena'. They are a very common houseplant, you see them a lot in malls and offices. They are fairly easy to maintain, and do not have a lot of pest type problems...
,,,But, of course, there is a 'but' to everything;
lack of humidity will cause the tips of dracaenas to turn brown. You can clean these up by trimming the edges with a good sharp pair of scissors in the same shape of the leaves. You can try misting the plant every couple of days to increase the humidity around it.
This could also be caused by too much fertilizer, which would burn the leaves. When a greenhouse is getting plants ready to send out for sale, they shoot the plants up with heavy doses of fertilizer-you will sometimes see green pellets in the soil, that is what this is. Unless you repot the plant, you should not fertilize a new one for at least a month.
Kathleen, I hope this has helped you-
Good luck!
