Question - In answer to your question about temperature etc in the summer the temperature can reach up to 85 degrees fahrenheit and as low as near freezing. I would say 60 per cent of the time it's overcast. Am I looking at cacti? Hope this helps. Thanks, Steph
I have an east facing conservatory/large porch. When it gets the sun, no matter what season, it can get quite-very hot, but with no sun, particularly during the winter months, the room can be quite cold. There is no form of heating in the room (sometimes we may put an electrical portable heater in). I'd love to fill it with non-flowering, leafy green houseplants, but didn't know whether there were any that could withstand the 'climate'. NB I live in Buxton, Derbyshire! Is there any hope?! Can you help, please? Thank you.

Hi Stephanie,
Temperature extremes are very important in selecting plants. Can you tell me just how cold and just how hot it gets in your conservatory?
Light is also very important. Can you tell me approximately what percentage of your days are overcast.
As soon as I have your reply I will make some recomendations for you.

AnswerHi Stephanie,
The combination of cold winter temps and limited sun limits your choices. The following plants should do well, although some may not do well at temps below 5 degrees C.
Agapanthus
Aspidistra
Azalea
Christmas cactus
Cyclamen
Fatsia japonica (Japanese aralia)
Hedera (English) ivy
Jade plant
Rhapis palm
Spider plant
Please let me know if you have questions about any of these plants.
