QuestionMy jade plant has recently taken a turn for the worse. Upon closer inspection, I noticed these little whitish colored bugs in the soil of my plant. They are very tiny-less than an eight of an inch, and look like a mite or something. What are these little things, and how do I get rid of them? I would like to try and save my jade plant if possible. Thank you for your help.
AnswerHi Jessica,
It is not uncommon for tiny critters to take up residence in the soil of plants. They are not harmful to the plants, but they are often a symptom of poor quality (unsterilized) soil or keeping the soil too moist.
Here is what I suggest. Let your Jade get very dry nearly to the bottom of the pot. Then plunge the pot up to its rim in a sink or tub full of plain water. Leave it for 30 minutes. This will force the critters out of the soil as they seek oxygen. Then remove the pot from the water, let it drip dry and don't water it again until the soil is very dry.
BTW, Jades do best in small pots and in direct sunlight.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
