I have a black magic plant that is in a 14" pot. The plant is constantly growing new shoots, but the shoots continute to grow with out growing new leaves(long and tubular). At differnt points of the new shoot, it seem to be growing roots (very short). At this point the new shoot is as tall as the plant (18" tall). Is this a new plant coming up? Am I suppose to cut the new shootS and plant it or is it a flower?

Hi Roland,
I am having trouble identifying your plant. There is a species of Viola called black magic and a species of Colocasia called black magic. However, neither seem to fit your description.
Do you know the botanical name for your plant? Or can you e-maiol a photo of it to me at
[email protected]?
Once I know the plant ID, then I can answer your question.

The plants is a species of Colocasis.
AnswerHi Roland,
Colocasias have two types of shoots that emerge from the base of the plant. One type is a leaf stem that emerges with the leaf initially furled around the stem that unfurls as it develops. The other type is a flower stem that has a hooded spathe at the top and a bulbous growth at the base of the flower stem.
There is no reason to prune off either of these shoots, unless they have dried up or died.
Let me know if this is unclear or if you have additional questions.
