QuestionI have a Ficus tree that is approx 5 ft tall potted in a pot approx 14" wide and 13" high. I water it about once a week, sometimes go two weeks. The leaves are falling off daily. why is this happening? It is in indirect light. I have had it for about three years. The leaves are not turning color, they are just falling off.
AnswerHi Barbara,
Ficus trees are notorious for dropping leaves whenever their environment (light) changes or the soil gets too dry.
If you recently moved your tree, then that is the likely cause of the leaf drop. As long as the tree is close to an unobstructed window, then it will gradually adapt by replacing most of its leaves over the course of several months.
If you have had the tree in the same location for three years and it is not close to a window, then it may be gradually starving for light and dying. In that case, the only cure is to get it in front of a bright window.
If neither of the above apply, then you probably allowed the tree to get too dry. Two weeks is probably too long in between thorough waterings. Even a single episode of excessive dryness can cause a week or two of leaf drop. Your tree should be watered as soon as the surface of the soil feels almost dry.
I have written an article on Ficus tree care that I can e-mail to you if you send a request to me at the address below.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
