QuestionWe have a pothos and shefalera(spell?)plant in our office in seperate pots, every am when we come in there is a hole dug near the root area in one or the other. we moved one of the plants to another office and there has been no digging, we took the pothos plant (which had the most recent hole) outside and emptied it plant, roots, dirt only. We suspected a mole may have gotten in the bag from the last replanting, but we can't find him, can you think of any other pests that digs a hole and scatters the dirt on the desk top. And if so how do we trap, remove or destroy it. We have been baffled by this for about a month, it seemed to start after some fresh dirt was added. We have had a squirrel problem in the past but again we are finding no signs (feces) of any type of small rodent that usually leaves its calling card. thank you in advance of any help you can give us.
AnswerWow-it sure does sound as if you have a mouse or something playing around there! How large is the hole in the dirt? My first thought was something I have seen a lot of and that is a slug in the soil, but you would see him. They like to dig down into the soil but I don't think they could send soil flying all over the desks. How about a cat? My husbands office has a cat that hides in the rafters during the day and trips the security alarms all night long. Some cats like digging in plants. One thing you can try, depending on how curious you are, is setting a video camera up by the plant. Have you tried setting a trap in the pot?
Good Luck and let me know what happens!
