venus flytrap dying

Question
I have a Venus Flytrap that keeps losing it's traps, they go brown and fall off.

It is down to one immature pair that hasn't opened yet.

Do you know of any treatment for this? I would like to save the little critter.

I keep it on a window sill, I doesn't get too hot or cold and almost no direct sunlight. I have it's pot sitting in water.

Thanks

Alex

Answer
Venus flytraps are very fragile plants that do not last long in the typical home.

They have to be potted in sphagnum moss, not soil. The moss must be watered with distilled or filtered water that is mineral-free. They need bright light, but no direct sun. Temps must be in the 70 to 80 degree range. Finally, they must have constantly humid air.

If you fail to met all of these conditions, then the traps will die. I don't know which of these are applicable in your case. However, leaving it sitting in water is not a good idea and the roots may have already rotted.

I should also note that excessive handling and feeding of the traps will also cause their rapid demise.

Good luck and please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
